hey fran! here's a quick pattern for that star pattern you liked.
all fabrics can be cut into 2 1/2" strips to start.
for each block cut:
four 6 1/2" long dark strips
four 4 1/2" long medium strips
four 2 1/2" squares light
twelve 2 1/2" squares of background and
four 4 1/2" long strips of background
to make a block:
sew one 2 1/2" square to a 6 1/2" long dark strip along the diagonal. PAY ATTENTION TO DIRECTION OF DIAGONAL. trim the seam and press over as shown. make four of these per block.
using the same technique as above but with a 4 1/2" medium and a 2 1/2" background square and sew along the diagonal. remember to PAY ATTENTION TO DIRECTION OF DIAGONAL. trim seam and press over as shown. make four of these per block too.
sew one 2 1/2" background square to one 2 1/2" light square and press the seam. make four sets per block.
sew one 4 1/2" background strip to each background/light pair. press seam.
sew one medium plus background triangle to each three piece unit from above. pay attention to direction and placement.
sew one dark plus background triangle to each five piece unit from above.
sew the four units together pairwise. press, then sew the two pairs together to form a block.
below is the finished block.
for sashing you need two 2 1/2" squares of light fabric, two 2 1/2" squares of medium fabric, and one 4 1/2" x 2 1/2" rectangle of background fabric. sew them together in a row as shown below.
for cornerstones cut 2 1/2" squares of dark fabric.
below is the assembled quilt.
